Jay Garrick is the original Flash from DC Comics, debuting in 1940's Flash Comics #1. Unlike later Flashes who draw their powers from the Speed Force, Jay's abilities stem from inhaling hard water vapors, granting him super-speed, enhanced reflexes, and rapid healing.
A college student studying chemistry, Jay's accidental exposure to these vapors transformed him. Initially using his powers for personal gain, he soon dedicated himself to fighting crime. His costume is iconic: a winged metal helmet (inspired by the Roman god Mercury), a red sweater with a lightning bolt, and blue pants.
A founding member of the Justice Society of America (JSA), Jay operated primarily in the Golden Age of comics. His existence was later retconned to be on a parallel Earth (Earth-Two) in DC's multiverse. This allowed for the introduction of Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash, without negating Jay's history.
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Jay's Earth-Two was merged into the main DC Universe. He continued to be a prominent figure, acting as a mentor and elder statesman to younger speedsters and heroes, frequently appearing alongside the Justice Society and other teams.
